Project Partner:
East Africa Radio Service – EARS, Uganda
Project Duration:
October 2023 - December 2024
Project description
The scope of the project embraces an ‘edutainment’ aspect making radio a vehicle for educational entertainment. The East Africa Radio Service (EARS), a network of 102 licensed radio stations in Uganda, together with Minibus Media, a video production- and communication-consultancy based in Germany will implement a participatory radio-project aiming at enhancing musical culture and stimulating social as well as political participation and awareness through music and radio broadcasting.
The network of licensed radio stations in Uganda proposes to do a series of radio shows exploring the musical-essence of the Hip-Hop culture in the country. Hip-Hop has become the most popular musical genres especially within the younger generation in Uganda.
The central idea is to give the listening audience a platform for expressing publicly through lyrics and rhymes on human rights related topics (approaching health, environmental issues, electoral education, gender issues etc.) as well as rendering a space for emerging local artists.
‘Time travel into fat beats’ aims at producing radio shows in three seasons – at least 26 shows per season, each show running for 90 minutes. They comprise a compilation of the best known two decades of American and British Hip-Hop scene. Moreover, this radio show format intends to foster listeners to sing/rap on air. Listeners will have the possibility to vote for their favorite singing/rapping free style artist.
The main outcome entails empowering participants as agents of their social transformation. The envisioned radio-format shall encourage its audience to interact and switch from a passive into a more pro-active member of society.
